ORLANDO, Fla. – With summer just around the corner, I’ve been getting a familiar question — “Do school zones still apply once the regular school year ends?” — and it’s a good one, especially as we all shift into that more-relaxed summer driving mindset.
Here’s the deal: In Florida, school zones are only active on regularly-scheduled school days. That means once summer break kicks off, most school zone speed limits and flashing lights take a vacation, too.
However, there’s a very important “but” to consider.
Many schools offer summer programs or events, and in these cases, those zones can still be active. Even if the area isn’t packed with morning drop-off chaos or the usual traffic guard, if those flashing school zone signs are on, you are legally required to obey them. Period.

Could a signal be malfunctioning? Sure, it happens. But more often than not, those zones are lit up for a reason and I’d much rather be wrong about a light than tragically right about ignoring it.
So, the takeaway? Don’t gamble with school-zone signs. They’re there to protect kids, even during summer. If it’s flashing, slow down and stay alert. The ticket isn’t what should worry you, it’s the possibility of hurting someone because you thought school was “out for the summer.”
Stay safe, stay smart, and remember that the rules don’t go on vacation just because school does.
